The Fly Dressers’ Guild organises an annual fly-tying competition, which all members are encouraged to enter. The patterns and categories are normally published in the Autumn issue of Flydresser and are made available on the Fly Tying Competition page on The Fly Dressers’ Guild website.
If you have been put off fly-tying competitions by the idea that you need to tie dozens of entries to obtain three identical specimens, look up Tim Benn’s excellent article on Donald Downs’ advice for tying competition flies, “Prizes and Surprises” in the Autumn 2012 Flydresser, which is also available on the Fly Tying Competition page on the FDG website.
2016/ 2017 Competition
As 2017 was the 50th anniversary of the founding of The Fly Dressers’ Guild, the competition was set by taking a trip down memory lane and using from flies from the first proper magazines produced by the Guild. The majority of the flies are from the late 1980s.
The competition was again being sponsored by Veniard, who provided a prize for each of the category winners. The Guild is very grateful to Veniard for their generous support.
The Guild generally provides a trophy and certificate to all winners.
